I was one of the instructors at the A Girl And A Gun Conference at Cameo in Grand Junction this last week/weekend.
On Sunday, I did a sneaky experiment with the morning vision training class.
~5 minutes of simple drills resulted in an average 47% improvement in speed and accuracy!
For the test, we were 15 feet away from 5x 6″x6″ targets that were spread out about 45 degrees. Shooters were asked to keep both eyes open unless it got too frustrating…then they did both the before and after with one eye closed. In the picture below, the 6″x6″ portion of the target was the red/white reflective square at the bottom.
Shooters were using a T4E CO2 pistol with about 3x the recoil of airsoft so we could use a shot timer to record times. We weren’t using projectiles…we had a recoil activated laser on the rail and we were shooting reflective targets.
So, they shot the drill, and then we did the following.
1. We did a vision and breathing drill that can calm the limbic system and lower heart rate as much as 35bpm in people with dysautonomia. (That’s pretty common after Covid)
2. We did a sensory integration drill that I always have people do…that’s the drill that’s helped people shoot an average of 20% faster/more accurately.
3. We used a brand new vision training tool I’m about to release before the reassessment that helps stabilize eye dominance and helps with visual confusion with both-eyes-open shooting.
Then, we shot the drill again.
The improvement was DRAMATIC!
Some of the shooters had never successfully shot with both eyes open before. The long “before” times were due to this. They had to hit each target before moving on and the visual confusion from having both eyes open resulted in frustration and misses.
Even if we take out the high and low, it’s still an average of 47%.
To put this into perspective, the breathing takes less than a minute.
The sensory integration sequence takes less than a minute.
The other vision drill can be done in less than 3 minutes.
So, if you can take 5 minutes before you train and do these drills, your training time will be significantly more effective.
Why isn’t every instructor in the country starting their classes with these drills?
They should be, but there’s nobody teaching instructors how to do this…yet.
I’m going to be doing a 6 week live online Vision Training For Firearms Instructors class in July. We’ll be going into the drills I used and several more including a drill that I did with a LE marksman with a proven history as a military sniper that resulted in a 300% increase in accuracy in less than a minute.

May 5, 2023I have already purchased 2 T4E pistols. I am learning to appreciate more and more the importance of understanding what my students are seeing and the value of vision training. Thank you.
